Course FAQs
As the same questions tend to crop up, we have included answers to some common ones below.
Entry Requirements
If you are practical and reasonably coordinated of eye and limb you should be able to do this work. Basic geometry and arithmetic do help.
How easy is it to earn a living?
You must be able to sell yourself but the inherent fine quality of your work will help you in this.
But it won’t sell if nobody can see it. Nowadays you have a platform where the world can see it:
the website. Make a good one and get into exhibitions. Remember that to make a living in anything is difficult.
In our case clients need to trust us and a false word can lose that trust in the blink of an eye. I therefore deplore
false websites, they do all of us in this fine craft much harm. It is worth saying that most of us begin our making
career working for family and friends. My first pieces were very modest but oh! The celebration when that first payment
came in.
Visiting the workshop
In order to secure a place on the course you will need to visit the workshop and convince me that you wish to become a furniture maker even if this means an initial period of working for someone else. To work for someone else before setting up on your own is a very effective way of broadening your ability and tempering the knowledge you have gained in this intensive learning workshop. By visiting Ashridge you will of course answer all the questions that are left after looking at this website. You will also satisfy yourself finally that you have found the best way to make this enormous and deeply fulfilling change in your life. The commitment needed will be considerable but directly linked to the level of reward. Faint heart never won fair maiden. Good luck.
Where will I live?
Accommodation is not difficult in this area but you may need a little time in a B+B while finding it. Don’t be east of the river Dart and don’t expect to achieve something until you are down here to show your face to agents or landlords.
